National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week!
The National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health declares the first full week in May as National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. This week is dedicated to increasing public awareness about the triumphs and challenges in children’s mental health and emphasizing the importance of family and youth involvement in the children’s mental health movement!
The theme for 2010 National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is:
The National Federation invites all our chapters and statewide organizations to use this week to promote positive mental health, well-being and social development for all children and youth. Join the National Federation in sending out the following messages:
The National Federation will again sell and distribute green ribbons in preparation for Children’s Mental Health Awareness week. Let us work together to exceed last year’s total of 150,000 green ribbons worn during Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Please plan your mental health awareness activities and share your ideas with all of us…
Send your ideas and activities to kbennett@ffcmh.org
Another exciting event that complements our National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day – May 6!

For the fifth straight year, the National Federation of Families serves on the Executive Planning Committee for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. In its role as a Founding Partner and continuing Executive Planning Committee member, the Federation provides expertise and recommendations for SAMHSA’s initiative. That initiative promotes one day to highlight the collaboration among private and public sector organizations that helps children and youth with mental health needs and their families thrive at home, at school and in the community. This year, the Awareness Day Initiative has provided artwork to create materials, tip sheets and promotional support to help educate communities across the country on the importance of nurturing the social and emotional well-being of children from birth. “My Feelings Are a Work of Art,” is an Art Action created to assist parents, guardians, caregivers, teachers and other caring adults encourage very young children to better understand and communicate their feelings. The Youth Action, “When I Grow Up” was developed for Awareness Day so that adolescents and young adults can continue to serve as advocates for themselves, their peers and – this year — for younger children, by sharing facts about the efficacy of early intervention in social and emotional development. You can find out more about these Awareness Day activities and the materials available for implementing them in your community by visiting www.samhsa.gov/children or by contacting Lorrin Ghering at lghering@ffcmh.org
The enthusiasm that Federation chapters have demonstrated for Awareness Day activities during the Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week has always been a key component in educating decision-makers and opinion leaders at the national, state and local level that children’s mental health matters. We hope that the resources provided by Awareness Day enrich your outreach activities.
